本书基于媒介迭代和文化交融的时代语境，对国产动画十余年的发展进程进行整体思考，这个思路成为贯穿上下篇章的线索。上篇聚焦国产动画类型发展，即互联网媒介崛起，改变了很长时间内国产动画主要依托影院和电视频道进行传播的状况，使得不同媒介对传播内容定位更加明确，国产动画类型与受众间关系更为清晰，同时多元文化交融和碰撞直接且强烈地呈现在国产动画类型机制形成过程中。下篇则考察经历了创作规律和产业模式探索期和积累期后，国产动画显露出追寻文化内核的强烈欲求，同时面对新媒介改变受众心理和习惯的新挑战而进行的持续调整。
