清末民初出現不同「譯道」上的探賾者，包括個體和群體的編譯者，如外國傳教士（如馬禮遜父子、謝衛樓、傅蘭雅）、中國譯者（如孫中山、梁啟超、王國維、奚若、張聞天、馬君武、李達）、譯者群體（如「小說林社」江蘇翻譯群體）及不同類型的贊助人（如廣智書局、「小說林社」、金粟齋、上海東文學社、翰墨林書局、中華書局等）。 本書通過考察十二個譯者、譯者群體和贊助人的個案，把清末民初以譯者為中心的翻譯出版史視為一個整體看待，既從「蟲眼」對譯者和贊助人進行微觀的細緻考證，也從「鳥眼」的視野宏觀地提出問題意識；既重視「內部史」，又注意「外部史」的研究；著力從脈絡化的方法入手，闡發有關翻譯史研究的新開拓和新思路。
