本書係根據國立歷史博物館2007年所辦理之「臺灣文史系列講座」各場演講內容彙編而成，內容涵括：臺灣民間信仰、民間工藝、傳統建築、傳統戲曲、原住民藝術、美術設計史、原住民音樂等各面向，來引領社會大眾解讀臺灣史。本館出版本書的主要目的，除讓 未克參加講座的民眾也能分享各演講者的知識精粹之外，並著眼於記錄臺灣常民文化的歷史軌跡，同時提供社會大眾一種從文化史視角來理解臺灣歷史面貌的文本。
