《勞工開基祖》一書編自1988年以來，《台灣社會研究季刊》20年來關於台灣勞工研究的種種痕跡，「勞工研究」是立場清晰地從支持工人的立場出發，跨越領域的社會科學研究。明晰的立場使得它有別於「人力資源管理」或「勞工行政」等從資本或行政管理立場出發，通常自許為「客觀中立」，卻也同樣以工人為研究對象的領域。凡有資本主義僱傭勞動的地方，多半都有這些各種各樣關於工人的社會科學研究，但是其中「勞工研究」的興旺與否往往與當時當地工人運動的社會影響力息息相關。本書中，「勞動」、「勞工」與「工運」三方面研究兼具，某些作者甚至嘗試串連三個面向，勞工研究希望為工人運動服務，但不是運動的啦啦隊，而是企求提供運動前進所需要的各種主客觀分析與批判性的思索。
