本書是中國社會科學院圖書館承辦的“中國社會科學論壇：現代生活方式的文化根源”國際學術研討會的成果彙編。本書從多方面、多角度強調了文化多樣性的意義在於促進不同文化之間的相互理解、相互對話、相互尊重。文化不應是一個抽象的普遍概念，而應該是活生生的生活經驗。只有在這樣生動和具體的文化中，我們才可能觸摸到文化傳統的源流與脈絡，才可能在現代中找到傳統，在傳統中審視現代。
